The Truth about Options for Yoga Teachers (Part 6)

Partner Yoga: Usually, Partner Yoga is reserved to workshops or special occasion classes. When I first practiced Yoga, as a child, we did a lot of partner work. In those days, I don’t think we were really concerned with space issues. Kids tend to gravitate toward each other like a “litter of kittens.”

Somehow, Partner Yoga has not grown among adults in the popularity it deserves. In a Partner Yoga class, many students remark at how much they got out of each aspect, including meditation. A relaxation sequence can be performed with the crowns of the two heads being four to six inches apart. This actually creates a more intense form of relaxation.

Marie, my wife, and I used to teach these classes to singles groups. This puts a “new twist” on the term, “blind date.” Our Partner Yoga workshops did serve to get singles more comfortable with each other. So, Partner Yoga can be adapted and re-define the purpose of a Yoga class.

The Problem With Happiness

Humans have been seeking happiness since the beginning of time. Here we are in the most enlightened and technologically advanced period of history. Why are we still looking for happiness?

There are four problems with happiness:

1. We don’t know what it is.

All major Greek theories saw happiness not a matter of luck, but something we can control and increase. Aristotle’s term eudaimonia is often used interchangeably with happiness. But they are not synonymous.

For Aristotle, eudaimonia was an activity of flourishing, living an ethical life. Happiness was how you lived your life. The modern view of happiness is a state of mind, a feeling of how pleased we are with our lives. Much of what we read about happiness assumes that we have our basic needs met and are ready to master our reactions and attitudes.

Want to Lose Weight? Get Happy!

“Now and then, it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” - Guillaume Apollinaire

I’m about to tell you something very important. Here it is: If you want to lose weight because you think you’ll be happy when you do, fugitaboutit! Beware of any “I’ll be happy when…” thoughts. If you’re not happy at your current weight, you won’t be happy at your ideal weight either. Although getting thin cannot make you happy, getting happy can make you thin. Take the fast road to your desired weight (and anything else you desire) by getting happy. When you get happy first, everything you desire will flow to you. When you get happy first, the weight will come off as a lovely byproduct.
