Muscle building is a continuum. There is no “end” to it. You can always build more muscle than you have. What makes this really challenging is that the process by which you efficiently build muscle changes as you move through the continuum. Beginning lifters should use different training parameters than professionals. A further complicating factor is that your body is a variable as well. How do you account for that?

For example your body type makes a huge difference in the type of training you should do. So as you can see finding that right mix becomes very difficult. This is one of the reasons that I struggle with the “Programs” that so many offer. I would never suggest that anybodies program doesn’t work. Of course it did for them. That’s why they offer it up to you. But with all the variables at play will they work for you? Very possibly. Or not.

The point is you have to know how muscle works, how it is built and then given your body type, goals, experience and many other things, try different techniques until you find some that work for you and that you enjoy doing. My guess is that it will be some of this and some of that.

But one of the greatest challenges you will face is the one of age. That is one variable that will stand everything else on its head. You see a professional at 30 will HAVE to train differently at 50, all else equal. Now THAT becomes challenging. When something has been working, possibly for years, doesn’t anymore what are you to do? I am not talking about plateau busting, this isn’t that simple.

No I am talking about the two biggest factors (possibly) in muscle building, your definition of 100% effort for a workout and your recovery time. Granted these variables change gradually but they also change dramatically. At 50 gone are the two a day splits and blasting chest 3 times a week. Actually these have been gone for a while, but you get my point. So how do you teach an old dog new tricks?

Square 1. If you’ve been paying attention, I am not about “programs”. Knowledge is King! As I write this Greg Norman at 53 years old, is leading the British Open Golf Tournament, beating every other player in the world (except Tiger who isn’t playing). This includes the best in the world that’s half his age. You think Norman prepared for this event the same way he did when he was 30(and won it)? You think his routine at the event is the same now as it was then? Now he probably won’t win, but he doesn’t need to. He’s made his point already. At his age, at this point in his career, what he needs to be successful and how he got there are DIFFERENT then when he was 30.

So how do you find the right weight lifting routine for muscle building at 50? The same way you would at 30. Learn what works for you. Now.

Steve Robbins is editor and main contributor to www.muscleandhealth.org. He has been a lifelong fitness enthusiast and has the rare ability to bench press twice his body weight and run a marathon in the same day. At the age of 51.

Muscle Building (Body Building)- A Problem For You?

Dont worry we will solve it for you.

Probably the most common question I get other than “do you lift weights?” or “how much can you bench” is, “How do you get those abs?” Not many bodybuilders carry 6-packs around the entire year, and I’m no exception. However, during a ‘peaking phase’, my abs are pretty decent for a guy who was once completely obese!

They’re shocked at my first response, and you will be, too: “What are you thinking about when you eat? “After a few seconds of blank stares, I usually get the reply, “I don’t know… never really thought about it!” “Exactly,” I say. “How do you plan on getting any part of your body to respond, including your abs, without concentration on the challenge?”

However, it’s more than just ‘concentration’ – I’m literally telling my body what I want it to do with the food I’m eating, with the workout I’m doing, and with the cardio I’m performing. I often touch my mid-section to make a stronger connection. I’m constantly visualizing myself with the abs I want. I never waver from that vision. When I do, that’s when the fat loss slows down. Sounds too hocus-pocus? Give it a shot and then talk to me!

Let me give you one brief example of the power of thought on the body

In the book “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” by Malcom Gladwell, a fascinating study was noted about the power of mere association with physical performance. A group of individuals were asked to read documents that were riddled with subtle “age” words, like “prune”, or “wither”. They were then asked to walk to a hallway to take another test. They were not told the reason for the readings, or why the readings changed.

The result? Each time the person read more “age” words, they literally ALTERED the way they walked down the hall. Speed slowed down considerably… even posture changes were noted. They literally began to “act old”. If you think this does not work in reverse, think again.

It seems that you can’t pick up a paper or turn on the TV without hearing something about the current worldwide economic downturn. While the effects of this crisis are far-reaching, for those of us interested in muscle building and getting stronger it is even more pronounced. I doubt many will argue that the pursuit of more muscle mass and strength is a journey of excess.

To achieve your goals you need more weight, more sleep, and of course, more food. But with everyone tightening-up their budgets and with food prices already soaring well in advance of this latest economic downturn, we need to see what we can do to make our goals compatible with our paychecks.

First and foremost is to cut-out the unnecessary. Here are three places where you can trim some costs without sacrificing your gains.

1. Supplements
Sure, you may like that NO supplement or the high priced energy drinks, but wouldn’t a cup of coffee give you at least 90% of the benefit at a fraction of the cost? Or how about choosing regular old creatine monohydrate instead of creatine ethyl ester? In fact, you could probably get rid of pretty much every supplement you’re using, except for maybe a good protein powder and multi-vitamin, and not notice any measurable change in your progress.

2. Food
I know that eating organic is popular among those looking to gain muscle and be healthy, but you should be aware of what is important to buy organic and what is not. To make it simple, I would advise that most of your fruits and vegetables be organic, but things like grains and animal products are less important to buy organic. For animal products it is much more important to look for grass-fed sources of beef and dairy products then it is to look for organic sources. It is also a good idea to look for cheaper sources of protein since these are typically the most expensive items. Use the links below to find an article on this topic.

3. Gym
I am always amazed to find how many people have multiple gym memberships. In most cases this is completely unnecessary. In fact, if you have some basic equipment in your basement you might not need a gym membership at all! If you do need to keep your gym membership, consider opting for a longer contract that will give you a lower monthly rate or volunteering some of your time working at the front desk or cleaning the equipment in order to save on your membership costs. Not only will this help you save money, but it will force you to get to the gym more often!

Whatever you do, don’t let the current economic situation change your goals. If you are serious about building muscle then you will simply have to make a few more sacrifices to get there. Most importantly you need to re-evaluate what you are doing and stick with the basics, as this is what works time and time again. Figure out a budget and spend it on the things you know will make a difference: a scientific training program and high-quality food, not hype-laden supplements.

It’s not as difficult as you may think it is to build muscle. However, without the right tools you’ll be the guy that has been in the gym for 5 years without looking any different. I’ve compiled a few tips that will guarantee you’ll gain the muscle you want.

1. Eat Healthy- I used to think that I could get a great body by working out hard in the gym and slacking when it came to eating out of the gym. Sure, I still had a body better than most people. But I didn’t have the elite body I wanted. This all changed once I started to eat healthy.

2. Eat the Right Quantity- You can eat the healthiest food in the world, but if you aren’t eating the right amount it won’t matter. Your body needs a specific amount of calories to build muscle.

3. The Right Exercises- If you’re going to wuss out and do the easy exercises that everyone else does than you’ll leave the gym with smaller arms than when you first come in. The is a reason that skinny guy is sitting on the machine weights all day without gaining any muscle.

4. The Right Frequency- Make sure you do at least 2 upper body workouts and 2 lower body workout each week. Don’t neglect any part of your body or it might hurt your gains in other areas.

5. The Right Environment- Don’t you think it would be a lot easier to build muscle if you were surrounded by like-minded people? This is why you need to find a real gym and get out of the family fitness center. The people at the real gym also know what they’re doing.

To get a body that turns heads at the beach, makes your significant other proud to be with you, go check out the Top 3 Muscle Building Programs that will help you get the body of your dreams.

These are programs that I personally tried and saw results with. If you’re serious about building muscle you’ll want to check out these programs today.

Skinny muscle building can be a real challenge for those of us with an ultra high metabolism. While other people hit the gym every few days and come out bigger and stronger each time, the skinny guy can do the same and more for little effect which can be downright depressing and even intimidating! If you are a skinny type looking to gain muscle here are a few facts you need to know to get the most out of your workouts.

Intensity is king – Do not bother with lots of reps when weight lifting. The heavier the weights the better (as long as you can do a decent set of course). The speed and intensity of the set is what brings the blood into the right places and also tears the muscles which when healed create more muscle tissue and so muscle mass gain!
Muscles need calories – You need to eat more … and I do not mean just have a second helping at dinner either. You need to eat WAY more than you have been if you are finding it hard to pack on muscle because your metabolism is so fast that it burns through calories before there is anything left to store as fat and most importantly nothing left to FEED the muscle! Try eating calorie dense foods like avocado, tuna and salmon in olive oil, potatoes, past and so forth.
Rest grows muscles – While you may be very enthusiastic and motivated hitting the gym every day is not needed, in fact it is going to hurt your skinny muscle building attempt because you are not giving the body enough time to rest, restore and heal which creates muscle growth. If you hit the weights before your body has done this process it basically just resets everything you have done … what a waste of time!

So if you are determined to turn your skinny frame into a lean, muscular body and want to do it FAST click below to find out how you can and also why all the other bodybuilding magazines are lying to you.

I first started muscle building with solo routines of weight lifting exercises. I did not foresee the series of events that strengthened the bond I now have with my son

On my 49th birthday I came to a unsettling conclusion. I was totally and hopelessly out of shape. My back was sore every day and tendinitis was attacking my hands and arms. My appearance was horrible and my mood worse. Every day was the same. Antidepressants and talks with a therapist didn’t help. Oh yeah, and libido, forget it.

I had been athletic most of my life, running, playing tennis regularly for years and then taking up golf. All of a sudden I was losing the battle right before my eyes. What could I do? I wasn’t sure if there was anything I could do other than give in to the fact that I was getting older. This was serious, not like when I turned 40.

Somehow I managed to drag myself into the local YMCA in Bellingham, Washington. It was a nice comfy place with average Joe’s like myself. Some of the guys seemed like they were intent on building big muscles, but many, like me, were just there to get into good shape.

At first the going was slow and sometimes painful, but still encouraging. I almost always felt better on the days I worked out. My discipline wasn’t perfect. I would get lazy and skip a week or even a month, but I always managed to drag myself back in.

Like most fathers, I wanted my son to do as I did, so I somewhat forcefully dragged my 13 year old son, Jarryd into the gym with me. He was always a good athlete and naturally tough and strong. I figured he would take to it as I had.

After a few weight lifting exercises his words to me were, “I wouldn’t mind being a little stronger, but I really don’t like lifting weights all that much. It’s pretty boring, Dad.He came to the gym a few more times, but then lost interest. I let it go. Hey, I had a life to save.

A few months later I was home and Jarryd came into my room. I was changing my shirt and saw out of the corner of my eye that he was watching me. I could tell that he noticed ol’ Dad was lookin pretty good. I didn’t say anything and had to turn my head away to hide my self satisfied grin.

The next time I went to the gym, Jarryd came along. He seemed to be a little more into it than before and did a complete workout. Then he came again the next time I went. When I mentioned his newfound interest to him, he said that summer was coming and he wanted to look good at the beach. OK, it wasn’t me that motivated him, but girls. That was even better.

Every month Jarryd built a little more muscle. He had obviously decided to build some muscles. He got frustrated a few times because his muscles weren’t getting big enough fast enough. I had to remind him that he had to wait a bit longer for his hormones to really kick into the big muscle growth stage. It wasn’t what he wanted to hear, but he kept working.

A year later, Jarryd started telling me what weight lifting exercises I needed to do. Next he was instructing me on correct form, stretching, cardio and diet. Of course, eventually the hormones kicked in and his muscles started growing. He really began to work, running more, lifting with more focus and eating better.

I then noticed that guys of all ages would approach him and ask about certain lifts or just share information. He was turning into a real man with a good attitude, modest and helpful. And, oh yeah, the girl thing worked out pretty good.

So, here we are today. I’m now 60 and Jarryd is almost 24. We get together to work out a few days a week. We help each other to stay motivated. I’m feeling better than when I was 49 and he is getting even stronger. He easily lifts more than me now, but I am still the handsome one in the family.

Those solo weight lifting workouts are a distant memory. They have been replaced by a growing friendship. Yes, I can truly state that muscle building has strengthened the bond I share with my son.

William and Jarryd Davidson are partners in a muscle building, weight lifting exercise and fitness site.

What you ingest in your muscle building plan will not only assist you in developing your muscles but will also affect your mental well being.

The more cholesterol that a bodybuilder consumes, the better the muscle gain is – proven by a study conducted by Texas A&M University. The researchers of the study believe that the cholesterol from eggs aids muscle repair so that every resting period between workouts enables the muscles recover faster and grow stronger quicker. Specifically it is the yellow part of the egg, having high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (good cholesterol) that will assist you in your muscle building endeavors.

Hummus is high in protein and fibre, it provides a slow sustained release of energy into your blood stream and muscles helping you avoid blood sugar fluctuations. Snacking regularly on hummus topped rice cakes will give you a balanced mood and the determination to stick to your fitness plan.

Whilst oranges are well known for their vitamin properties, they also contain inositol. Inositol regulates and maintains the body’s insulin levels which will result in fewer mood swings and promotes a feeling of well being and peace. This fruit will also reduce blood cholesterol and breakdown the useless fats in your body which will assist in the development of your muscles.

Cauliflower is high in Vitamin C, which will give you a feeling of well being and feeds your muscles with energy boosting iron, be careful not to overcook all of the goodness out of your cauliflower or you will lose all of that muscle building goodness. Steam for a maximum of five minutes.

Butter beans contain dopamine which will give you a feeling of motivation and pleasure. Blend with a spoonful of mild mustard and some olive oil for a tasty dip.

Butternut squash is very high in zinc which promotes the healthy growth of nerve cells and fights depression. A great energy booster that is very tasty and easy to prepare. Peel, chop and roast just like a potato.

The liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin, often referred to as a natural steroid because it helps the body deal with stress. A bag of liquorice sweets can do wonders for your energy levels. Motivational sweets, what more could you ask for!

All of this doesn’t mean that sitting around scoffing liquorice and cauliflower omelets all day will give you huge muscles, the key is to maximize these feel good food tips with your muscle training.
