Putting baby to bed AWAKE – is it really that easy?

We know that sleep is necessary and natural, so why is it so hard to establish good sleeping habits for our babies? If the magic formula is simply to put your baby down to for a sleep when he’s still awake, why is that so hard in reality? I know from experience of both my children that as soon as I’d put them down awake, they would protest! Settling them would take so long I’d be tempted to feed them to sleep. The easy option would only take five minutes instead of sixty!

In their fantastic book, ‘Sleep’, Hollyer and Smith describe how falling asleep can literally be a frightening experience for babies. When we are asleep we are vulnerable. So for a newborn baby (who is completely helpless) to fall asleep alone, is clearly counter-intuitive. If we look back to primitive times, sleeping when not in the arms of a guardian may have meant death to a vulnerable infant. So it’s no wonder they protest when we put them down! Resisting separation from us is a basic survival instinct.

Add to that the sensation of actually falling asleep, which is alien and frightening for a newborn, and I can understand why our babies would prefer we were holding them close. I must admit that I also had a secret desire to break all the sleep books rules and let my precious bundles curl up on my chest all night long. But there’s only so long a baby will fit on your chest and once a sleep association is established, it’s hard to break. Sound, peaceful sleep certainly goes a long way to helping us have fun filled days and a happy family. And setting up bad habits in the early days only makes it harder to establish good ones later. I recommend getting all the cuddles you can in the day and when it comes to sleep times, put your baby down awake so that he can transition to sleep on his own. Your baby will need some support. He needs to know that it’s safe to go to sleep.

My first son always used to cry just before he fell asleep, sometimes for a few minutes, and my going to him only made him fully wake again, so he’d have to start the process of falling asleep all over again. Once I realised that he needed to cry for a few minutes, I gave us both a break. I stayed close and he was able to go to sleep without my intervention.

Here’s some tips for settling your newborn to sleep awake:

1 – New babies are easily over stimulated. Take him to a room that is dark and quiet to wind him down.

2 – Swaddle your baby so that he feels secure.

3 – A new baby (0-4 weeks) will only need to be awake for about 45 minutes before they need to go back to sleep. Leave it any later and they will find it harder to settle – which means more intervention from you.

4 – Hold, rock or feed your baby until he is drowsy but still awake and then lower him into his cot (bum first and then head – other way round and they wake right back up again!).

5 – Some little ones may need white noise to help them transition between sleep cycles.

6 – Keep a baby comforter close to your skin for a few hours and place it at the end of your baby’s crib so he is comforted by your smell.

By doing this in the early days, you will avoid setting up sleep associations that are later difficult to break. Your baby will learn an essential skill – how to go to sleep by himself, without your help. His need for sleep is both mental and physical. When our babies are sleeping, they begin to make sense of their worlds, their brains develop and their bodies grow. Sleep for our little ones isn’t something to hope for, it’s a necessity for us all!

If you’re after a guaranteed to work natural sleep remedy, well, then you have to get serious about your goal. Do you just want to sleep better tonight, tomorrow, and over the weekend? Or, do you want to sleep better every night for the rest of your life?

If you’d prefer to sleep soundly from NOW on, then you really have to stop turning to these tiny little insomnia tips and tricks to alleviate sleeplessness. Those insomnia tips & tricks may help to a small degree, but they won’t take care of the problem fully. What natural sleep remedy can take care of your sleeping problem completely? Simple, sound sleeptracks.

”Sound Sleeptrack? What’s That?”

Basically, a sound sleeptrack is a simple CD/tape/mp3 that you listen to when trying to sleep. All you do is turn it on, get into bed, then shut your eyes and try to go to sleep as usual.

”How Does It Work?”

This natural sleep remedy — rather than trying to relax your body like most other natural insomnia remedies — helps to relax your mind. The soundwaves from the track work their way into your brain and then they try to put it on a “friendlier” rhythm for sleep. Without getting too technical, the best way to describe this natural sleep remedy is by calling it a “brain massage,” as the sound waves “massage & caress” the brain until the person is fast asleep.

”What Sort of Sounds Will I Be Listening To?”

Generally speaking, most of the sounds on a sleeptrack will be gentle pulses and rhythmic beating, such as that of drums and low-pitched tones.

Some sleep soundtracks will have sounds of the ocean, sounds of the rain forest, rainfall, wind chimes, etc. However, those sort of sleep soundtracks generally aren’t that effective. They are pleasant sounds, yes, but they don’t necessarily help with getting the brain on a better rhythm for sleep.

”How Will I Know This Natural Sleep Remedy Is Working?”

You won’t — well, not while your listening to it anyway. The soundwaves work behind the scenes on your brain and subconscious mind. You won’t have any idea the sleeptrack is working until the next morning, when you either feel newly refreshed & well rested OR tired & burnt out as usual.

”If These Sleeptracks Are So Great, Why Don’t More People Use Them?”

Truth be told, more & more people are indeed beginning to use sleeptracks in order to fix their poor sleeping habits. However, that fact aside, the mainstream public isn’t aware of this great natural sleep remedy simply because the drug companies have people convinced that sleeping pills are the only way to treat and/or cure insomnia problems. This, as you now know, is untrue.

”Alright, You Convinced Me. Where Can I Get One Of These Sleep Soundtracks?”

From an online specialty website, that’s where. To be honest, you can actually get them from local department stores; but as mentioned earlier, those soundtracks will likely be “pleasant sounds” that don’t really help you to sleep better. In light of that, try to stick with online websites which specialize in insomnia treatments and sound therapy. Such websites might be in short supply, but a quick online search is all you need to find the perfect one for you.

”Is This Guaranteed To Work For Me?”

As you probably know, no treatments or remedies for insomnia are guaranteed to work for everyone out there. However, if this natural sleep remedy doesn’t work for you, you can always get a refund, as any & every RELIABLE sleeptracks system will come with a iron-glad, money back guarantee.

When there is a new baby in the house, it is common to hear the parents complain about the lack of sleep. During the first few months, babies go through erratic and interrupted sleep patterns. It is during this time that parents can put forth a considerable amount of effort to put baby to sleep. Usually, baby ends up sleeping in the parent’s arms as they rock or breastfeed baby to sleep. This, however, leads to more trouble as baby begins to anticipate falling asleep in the parent’s arms.

Don’t allow your baby to fall asleep in your arms. This is the first step in training your baby to sleep independently. The baby’s bed is the best place for your baby to fall asleep. This gives the baby an opportunity to fall asleep without unnecessary fuss. Also, remember to put your baby down awake, but sleepy.

The second step is to make sure that your baby goes to sleep at the same time every night. Be consistent and soon baby will establish a sleeping schedule. Be persistent in this method and your baby will soon learn how to fall asleep independently. After 2 months of age, you may start to encourage baby to fall asleep without your help.

As much as possible, don’t allow your baby to sleep in your bed. Babies who become accustomed to sleeping with their parents will not want to sleep in their own beds. If you choose to sleep in the same bed with your baby, care should be taken to avoid using soft sleep surfaces.

One factor to be wary of when training your baby to sleep on his own is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It is the leading cause of death among infants under one year. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is an unforeseen and unexpected death of even a healthy baby. It is also known as cot or crib death. It is recommended that you always use the back sleep position instead of a side sleep when you put your baby to bed. It provides the best safeguard against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. However if your baby has reflux, have your physician recommend the best sleeping posture for your baby.

Also, use a firm sleep surface such as a safety-approved crib mattress covered by a fitted bed sheet. Clear any blankets, soft toys and other soft items. Keep your baby’s sleeping area close to you but separate from where you and other family members sleep.

By engaging in this technique, parents can slowly teach babies to sleep on their own. Babies will cultivate good sleeping habits and parents will eventually welcome back a good night’s rest.

Is your baby sleep schedule keeping the both of you up all night? Are you zombified and exhausted from lack of sleep? Getting baby to sleep through night time crying is the goal of every new mother, but not everyone knows how to do it. Get help right now, and sleep well starting tonight!

Whether you’re a first-time mom or an old pro, chances are you’ll encounter more than a few sleepless nights as your infant wakes up crying. Does she need to be fed? Does he need to be changed? Every baby’s needs are different, just as every single toddler is different in his or her own unique way. As a parent, it’s your job to understand this concept – it’s the key to both your happiness!

Standard baby sleep products and old wives tales aren’t enough to get your child on a solid, regimented baby sleep schedule. Remember that your son or daughter just spent the last several months in the warmth and comfort of your belly… he or she has no idea of the difference between day or night. Darkness and light are a brand new concept, and many mothers make the mistake of assuming that their newborn will inherently know when it’s time to lay down for the night and when it’s time to get up in the morning. Not so. Babies have to be taught these things, and the best training you can give them will include a set schedule that you both must adhere to. The further you stray from this routine, the harder it’s going to be for your child to fall into a set sleeping pattern.

Keeping your child up all day is another mistake many new parents try to make, thinking this will help in getting baby to sleep through night. The problem with this approach is simple: babies need much more sleep than you do. Very often it’s not a matter of the quantity of sleep they get, but the quality and timing of the sleep that’s important. Choose nap times for your child that are best suited to your own schedule, then strongly adhere to them. Infants love routine and resist change – you’re going to make your child unhappy by breaking that baby sleep schedule just to show him or her off to your friends, family and so on. And when your toddler is screaming at midnight, you’re going to make yourself unhappy too.

The Baby Sleep Solution is an amazing guide for the many aspects of this common problem. The techniques and tips within are designed to help you identify which type of sleep category your child falls into, and then gives customized guidelines as to how to get baby to sleep at night. Within you’ll learn quick solutions that you can begin applying as early as tonight – solutions that will allow your child to fall asleep on his or her own. This type of sleep is proven to be more restful than just letting an infant cry itself out.

This guide also details almost two dozen individualized techniques that can be applied toward achieving your ultimate goal: enjoying a restful, peaceful night. By following these methods your baby will sleep straight on through the night, evening after evening, guaranteed.

If you are one of many who have been long looking for a way to conceal your bulges and haven’t quite found a suitable solution, Marena Everyday might be what you’re looking for. Marena Group, world leader in the post surgical compression apparel space, launched the Everyday line of premium non therapeutic shape wear last year. Everyday products are designed for daily wear and are proven to be more effective and comfortable than other brands in this category.

The company recently introduced Everyday Sleep Wear, a line of shape wear for the night. Developed and manufactured with the same scientific precision and innovative technology that make other Everyday products the preferred choice of countless customers, the Sleep Wear line of apparel is as effective as it is comfortable. Soft and breathable enough to wear right through the night, these are engineered to flatten your bulges and soothe tired muscles whilst you sleep.

Everyday Sleep Wear like all other products in this category are manufactured from ComfortWeave, a superior patent – pending F5 certified fabric, which offers unmatched benefits to wearers. It is the combination of scientific fabric construction and advanced apparel design that makes Everyday garments so effective, durable and comfortable.

The award winning Marena Group, which began as a husband – wife venture from their home in Atlanta, Georgia, has focused consistently on scientific development, laboratory testing and clinical analysis to develop the most advanced compression apparel on the market today. All their products are engineered so as to deliver high performance without compromising wearer comfort. The company manufactures all Everyday garments at state of the art sewing facilities in the United States.

ComfortWeave’s unique features make it ideally suited for sleep wear. The only compression material with three dimensional stretch properties, this fabric provides multi directional support while you sleep. And a high degree of elasticity ensures that whilst your sleep wear garment compresses, it does not squeeze your body because it has the capacity to yield a little and wrap like a second skin. The fabric is manufactured from premium fibers such as INVISTA’s Lycrasoft spandex and Tactel nylon, which make it the softest compression material available today. ComfortWeave feels like knitted silk against your skin and caresses you whilst you sleep. The fabric’s inbuilt Coolmax® moisture absorption system makes sure that your sleep wear remains cool and dry all night. This is because perspiration is absorbed away from the skin to the garment’s outer surface and into the atmosphere. Antimicrobial protection combats the growth of microorganisms ensuring that garments don’t develop unpleasant odors.

The Marena Everyday Sleep Wear line includes sleep leggings, sleep bra and sleep shorts, all three of which are silky soft yet strong enough to support and shape your body whilst you sleep. The leggings are as soft as silk and caress tired curves and muscles all night long. Made of fabric that breathes, they keep you feeling cool and dry. They also facilitate the reduction of cellulite. These tough and comfortable leggings come in three different colors with lace trimmings that give them a dainty look.

The sleep bra is scientifically designed to provide optimal support and maximum comfort. This super soft bra has special form enhancing seams, gathered stitching around the bust and seven front closures. Designed to mold like a second skin, it shapes and supports whilst you sleep. It is so comfortable that you feel as if you have nothing on. The bodice and cups are smooth enough for deep recuperative slumber and the fabric enables air circulation keeping you cool and fresh all night long.

The super soft and strong sleep shorts come with lace trimming and a wide waistband. These stylish shorts support tired muscles and shape you as you sleep. Made of premium breathable fabric, they are so comfortable and light that you forget you have them on. They also come with the benefit of reducing cellulite appearance.

Both the leggings and sleep shorts enhance circulation in your legs whilst you sleep. This works wonders for sore legs and you don’t wake up in the morning with tired aching muscles. Better circulation can also prevent lymph edema.

Unlike Marena post surgical compression wear, Marena Everyday products provide slightly lower pressure at around 17mmHg. This makes Everyday shape wear ideally suited to slimming, shaping, improving skin tone and energizing the body. Wearing Everyday sleep wear regularly helps you to realize these benefits. With regular wear you find yourself looking slimmer than before and feel more energetic. Long term wear is also known to yield significant physiological benefits.

Your Everyday sleep wear like all Marena products is engineered to last a long time. ComfortWeave and other F5 fabrics are the most durable stretch material on the market today. F5 fabrics withstand more pressure and wear better than other stretch fabrics. This fabric is designed so that premium fibers interlock in the weave thereby producing a very resilient structure that can well withstand intense pressure and flexing. Laboratory flex tests have shown that the fabric retains its shape beyond 30 washes and as many as 60,000 flexes. Other powernet fabrics do not last as long. So your Marena Everyday garment will continue to perform over a longer period.

High performance, comfort and durability make Marena Everyday sleep wear an ideal all weather choice. You can wear them in any climate and feel cool and dry right through the night. Because the fabric is specially designed to maintain a balanced temperature, you will find you sleep soundly despite the compression.

Details of Marena Everyday garments can be found on their website, www.marenaeveryday.com. Garments can be viewed and purchased online. You can also read customer reviews to help you decide. Try a Marena Everyday garment and see and feel the difference. These products are so soft, comfortable and supportive that you are likely to go back for more. You need no longer fret over those extra pounds, unsightly bulges and uneven skin tone. Let Marena Everyday take care of them whilst you sleep.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is an illness that many people fail to recognize until after the symptoms have caused grief to the family and employers. In fact, the spouse is often the first one to realize that there may be a physical reason for the odd behaviors and symptoms of someone suffering from sleep apnea (OSA).

Someone suffering from this sleep disorder will often snore very loudly. The snoring may be so loud, in fact, that his or her partner gets little sleep. Someone with OSA will also appear to stop breathing for a second or two during sleep, which looks like they’re temporarily holding their breath. The subsequent lack of oxygen causes them to be startled awake, but often they are completely unaware that they wake up many times during the night. Since the individual usually drops back to sleep almost immediately, and then begins snoring again, partners often believes they are the only ones missing sleep. This can be a severe strain on the relationship, especially if the person with OSA refuses to seek treatment.

It may look as though an individual with this sleep disorder is getting lots of sleep, so it seems strange to others if the individual has difficulty staying awake during the daytime, even dropping off to sleep at inappropriate times. They may have difficulty concentrating, and appear depressed. Because they really aren’t getting quality sleep during the night, they may also have a reduced interest in sex, and other personality changes can also occur. Some of these symptoms are similar to common mental health disorders, and others are seen by friends and coworkers as symptoms of laziness or sloth. This judgement can add to the individual’s stress, and can make relationship problems even worse.

If someone you know who suffers from these symptoms, it would be wise to encourage them to see their doctor. The snoring and obstructed breathing during sleep usually have a physical cause, which may vary from one individual to another. There may be an obstruction in the upper airway due to excess tissue caused by obesity, or the tonsils or tongue may be too large. In addition, the airway muscles are usually relaxed or collapse during sleep.

Some of the causes of sleep apnea are also associated with other life-threatening conditions. A proper diagnosis is important, because if the individual goes without treatment he or she will have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat, and other forms of heart disease. In addition to the physical risks of this sleep disorder, relationships with families, friends and employers may continue to suffer. Productivity at work will go down because the individual is so abnormally sleepy, and it can become dangerous to work with heavy equipment or drive an automobile.

There are a number of ways that obstructive sleep apnea can be treated, including the use of a C-PAP (continous positive airway pressure) machine. This machine has a nose mask that is worn during sleep. The C-PAP machine keeps air blowing into the nose, which will keep the airway open. If obesity is a causitive factor in sleep apnea, as it often is, the patient will be advised to slim down. Weight loss is almost always accompanied by a complete cessation of sleep apnea symptoms, and for this reason some obese OSA patients are opting for gastric bypass surgery.

Because sleep apnea may be caused by a variety of factors, and because the symptoms could also be caused by sleep disorders other then OSA, a diagnosis by a qualified professional is needed before treatment can begin. Your doctor will usually prescribe a sleep test, which is done by a specialized clinic. This test is usually covered by medical insurance, but it is always a good idea to call your insurance carrier to see if they require you to visit a clinic that is contracted with them. The results of the sleep test will tell your doctor if any form or respiratory equipment is required, or if surgery is indicated. Experimental treatments, such as the Radio Frequency Procedure developed by Stanford University, will probably not be covered by your insurance.

Do you snore, or do you sleep with someone who snores so loudly that you can’t get any sleep? It’s time to see a doctor to find out if sleep apnea is to blame.

You know the feeling you get when you see an attractive person? It feels like your heart stops beating for a few seconds and you can’t seem to breathe, let alone find a way to put together a sentence and speak to that person.

Now think about this: what if the same thing happened to you in your sleep? You probably wouldn’t believe that it could happen. However, it can, and it happens to millions of people each night. It’s called sleep apnea.

What is sleep apnea? Well, sleep apnea is a serious sleeping disorder that often causes you to stop breathing for several seconds. When you stop breathing, it causes a sharp drop in oxygen in your blood and interrupts your sleep. Sleep apnea can signal a more serious health problem that can be dangerous if not treated.

So now that you know the answer to ‘what is sleep apnea’, how do you know if you suffer from it? Well, if you wake up in the middle of the night with a strong urge to go to the bathroom, you may have it. Or, if you snore, feel tired all day or wake up gasping for air, you may suffer from sleep apnea as well.

If you think you suffer from sleep apnea, visit your doctor as soon as possible. He will be able to answer your questions, like “what is sleep apnea” and then actually diagnose it by administering a sleep study commonly known as polysomnography and a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure.)

Your doctor will also be able to determine what form of sleep apnea you have: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA.) Obstructive sleep apnea is cause by the obstruction of the air path, usually by swelling, an enlarged uvula or fat (common in obese people.) The obstructions reduce the amount of oxygen that can go into the lungs, thus causing the person to gasp for air because there isn’t enough going in. Obstructive sleep apnea needs to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because it can cause other health problems like hypertension.

Central sleep apnea happens when the brain doesn’t send the appropriate signals to the respiratory muscles. When the signals aren’t there, the muscles don’t know to breathe and breathing will stop for an extended period of time-usually ten to twenty seconds. Central sleep apnea is prevalent in people who had cardiovascular problems as infants or have congenital heart defects. To treat central sleep apnea, the underlying cause (heart problems) must be treated too.

When someone tells you that they have problems sleeping, ask them if they have sleep apnea. If they ask you, “what is sleep apnea,” you can educate them and help them seek treatment. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that can cause more health problems in life. See a doctor right away if you think you may have sleep apnea. Seeking treatment early is the key to fixing the problem, getting a better night’s sleep and preventing major health problems down the line.

Some people just can’t get themselves to sleep even if they want to. Teen-agers are not exempted from getting sleep problems not only because they are usually overloaded with school projects which take most of their sleeping time. Even with all the hustle and bustle that comes with school, teenagers’ normally have enough adrenalin to last them till the wee hours of the morning.

Still, frequent sleep deprivation can cause problems even for the most healthy and vibrant youngster. Young people who experience sleep deficit have difficulty concentrating, studying, and working effectively. Long-term sleep deprivation can actually lead to emotional problems like depression.

According to recent studies, teenagers need 8½ to more than 9 hours of sleep every night. However, during the stage of adolescence, the body’s internal biological clock, also known as circadian rhythm, is reset. The changes in the circadian rhythm makes them fall asleep later at night and wake up later in the morning. Experts attribute this change in the circadian rhythm to the fact that the brain hormone called melatonin is produced later at night in teens. Melatonin is released earlier in the night among kids and adults. Also, the delay in the sleep–wake cycle can worsen and possibly affect a person’s daily performance at school or at work. This is called the delayed sleep phase syndrome.

Aside from changes in their body clocks, young people may also lose sleep due to insomnia, or the inability to fall asleep or staying asleep, which is commonly caused by stress. But there are other factors which may cause insomnia. These include physical discomfort such as stuffy nose due to colds or headaches; emotional problems like family issues or relationship troubles; and uncomfortable sleeping conditions, such as lying in a room that is too hot, cold, or noisy. Trying to sleep in a cramped bed or using pillows that are too soft or too firm also contributes to sleep deprivation.

Insomnia is also one of the most common problems associated with sleep deprivation. This sleeping problem lasts for a long period of time without relief. Chronic insomnia can be caused by a number of different problems, including medical conditions, mental health problems, medication side effects, or substance abuse. In extreme cases, chronic insomnia may lead to psychophysiologic insomnia — a condition where a person’s mind and body are severely affected by sleep deprivation. Sufferers of chronic insomnia are advised to seek help the help of physicians, therapists, or counselors for their condition.

A nightmare is a common experience among teens which can disrupt sleep patterns. Certain medications can trigger nightmares. Drugs and alcohol can also cause sleep altering patterns. However, stress and anxiety can also trigger nightmares. If nightmares interfere with sleep, it’s time to talk to medical health professionals. Other conditions that can affect sleep in young people include Periodic Limb Disorder, Restless Legs Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Reflux, Narcolepsy, and Sleepwalking.

When there’s a feeling of fatigue even after getting enough rest, a consultation with your doctor is advised. Excessive fatigue can be due to a number of health reasons, not just a sleep disorder. Doctors can do a physical examination and may review a person’s medical history when they suspect the presence of other conditions that interfere with sleep.

Some sleep disorders can be treated with over-the-counter sleeping pills while others can be addressed through special therapy meant to reset a person’s body clock. Teens are encouraged to make lifestyle changes that promote good sleeping habits such as avoiding playing video games or watching TV before sleeping, as well as drinking too much coffee at nighttime.

Yawn! Go ahead. Chances are good that you are sleepier than you think you are. You might even want to stretch luxuriously and go take a nap. Why? Chances are better that no matter what ails you, sleeping well will help you heal. Sleep deprivation is epidemic in our society. Nearly all of us need more sleep than we get. I believe a sudden wave of drowsiness should be taken as seriously as the chest pain that might signal a heart attack. Drowsiness is an urgent warning that should not be ignored, particularly in situations where dozing, inattention or impaired performance could lead to catastrophe. In such situations, stop what you are doing now and take a nap. Many cultures honor the afternoon siesta. Americans should, too. In fact, we should look beyond the headlines to the thousands of little disasters sleep deprivation causes every day. Sleepiness contributes to many car, truck, maritime and airline accidents. Prevention of thousands of motor vehicle deaths a year is a reason enough for Americans to get more sleep, but a good night’s sleep contributes to health and longevity in many other ways as well.

1.	Productivity

Sleep deprivation hits America right in the wallet by reducing productivity. It impairs the abilities to read, write, react, reason, do math and make decisions – every faculty that contributes to getting jobs done well. People with chronic insomnia are less productive than normal sleepers, and they report 2.5 times as many auto accidents. But you do not have to have insomnia to have sleep deprivation impair your performance. Guess when doctors are most likely to order the wrong medications for hospital patients; at the end of a long, overnight shift. Guess when nurses are most likely to give the wrong medications; Guess when police are most likely to fire their weapons inappropriately. You get the picture. The list goes on and on.

2.	Recovery

Why do so many illnesses send us straight to bed? An increased need for sleep is the body’s way of orchestrating recovery. Most growth and most recovery from illness occurs during sleep, specifically during the deepest, or delta, stage. Children spend a good deal of the night in delta sleep because they are growing. As adults grow older, delta sleep diminishes. Many people believe that loss of sound sleep is caused by aging, but it might just be the other way around. A decline in delta sleep may play a key role in the physical decline of aging by limiting the body’s ability to repair itself. You may not be able to “sleep like a baby” once you hit 50, but for general well-being and recovery from all illness, few therapies beat a good night’s sleep.

3.	The Common Cold

Ever catch a cold after pulling an all-nighter? A person with a large sleep debt is much more vulnerable to infections and other illnesses. The reason is that, without adequate rest, the body cannot fully recover from day-to-day stresses and the immune system cannot fully defend against disease-causing micro-organisms.

4.	Longevity

A study showed that adults who slept six hours or less a night had significantly higher death rates from all causes than those who slept seven hours or more. Not surprisingly, motor vehicle accidents accounted for many of the fatalities among those who slept the least, but how people schedule their sleep appears to be as important as how much sleep they get. The study revealed a significant association between untimely death and shift work, the increasingly common practice of working through the night or the even more hazardous practice of switching shifts frequently. In addition to their higher death rate, those whose jobs call for them to switch shifts – physicians, nurses, police, firefighters, pilots, and bus drivers are five times more likely to experience mental health problems than people who work in days. If you do shift work, you might want to reconsider your schedule. If you can’t change your sleep schedule, make sure you sleep at least 8 hours out of every 24.

5.	Heart Disease

The connection between sleep and heart disease focuses on something most people dismiss as simply an annoyance – snoring. Quite often that’s all it is. But sometimes snoring is a red flag for heart disease – and very few people know it. If your bedmate snores loudly, with periods of thrashing and choking silences, and then complains of daytime drowsiness, he or she may have sleep apnea. Apnea means a lapse in breathing. People with sleep apnea sometimes stop breathing for up to one minute at a time. Interrupted breathing keeps oxygen from entering the blood and as a result, sleep apnea strains the heart, elevates blood pressure and increases the risk of heart attack and heart failure. If you suspect that your bedmate might have sleep apnea, encourage him to discuss it with his doctor. It just might save his (or her) life.
